President's Message

Sandison Michael web

Welcome to the Society for Education in Anesthesia website. The Society was founded in 1985 by an idealistic group of young anesthesiologist-educators, including the late Dr. Phil Liu. For 30 years the S.E.A. or “SEA” has been a member-driven organization, dedicated to the teaching and development of anesthesiologists and those who educate them. We are a collaborative and inclusive community of medical educators whose vision is “excellence in patient care through education”. We are an organization that supports our colleagues, encourages their development, and celebrates their achievements. We seek out innovative, creative and unique solutions for teaching our specialty. We view the changing landscape of medical practice and education as an opportunity for growth and improvement, and embrace all those who wish to participate.

The SEA serves its membership and the larger anesthesiology community through two national conferences: a one-day annual session, preceding the ASA meeting in the fall, and a four-day meeting each spring. These conferences, which emphasize active learning in the setting of workshops and small groups, allow attendees to interact with one another, network, and explore various aspects of learning and teaching. The workshops aim to produce curriculum content and evaluation tools. The Society is dedicated to addressing the ongoing changes and requirements of medical education and physician training. The very popular and highly regarded four-day “Workshop on Teaching” presented by SEA in January of each year enhances and improves teaching in our specialty. Many members have reported accelerated professional and personal growth after attending this workshop.

The work of the SEA is our powered by numerous committees. Links on this website allow one to view these different work groups, their membership, and many of their projects and products. It is through these groups that members can become involved and take on mentoring and leadership roles within our society. In addition, the website contains programs and content from past, and for future conferences. The website also contains teaching tools for medical students and residents as well as links to our electronic newsletter, and our PubMed indexed journal – the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine (JEPM).

I encourage you to explore this website and learn about us; attend one of our conferences and become infected by the energy and enthusiasm you will undoubtedly encounter; become a member and join a community of supportive and collegial educators, who want everyone to participate and succeed.
